Training Methodology

  • All our AIM courses are broadly classified into four learning components of music which are as follows :

    • Applied Theory & Rudimentary Preperation
    • Aural Comprehension
    • Proficiency and Virtousity
    • Repertoire Building
  • APPLIED THEORY & RUDIMENTARY PREPARATION

The Carnatic Flute is one of the oldest instruments of India and is a Transverse Instrument, i.e. side blown flute, unlike the regular wind instruments that are played by holding straight and blowing right into the notch / reed.

The Hold is the most significant thing to bring the different styles of playing. The Venu or the Flute used in Carnatic Music is a 9 - Key Holes Instrument and the popular / widely used hold for this called “Parrot Clutch”

  • AURAL COMPREHENSION

Any form of musical learning will be considered incomplete without Ear Training. This is one of the important foundations to be set in the course of learning – Understanding Music by the Ear. The various techniques involved in Ear Training enables the student to adsorb the Musical framework of any composition by listening. This practice enhances the musical Receptiveness & Discernment.

The Aural Practice methods includes a Must – Do routine for all student to develop Musical Intuitiveness. This will advance the learner to discern the aesthetic musical forms from a plethora of free range of musical sources from various digital platforms like YouTube Music, Spotify etc.

Students learn to aurally differentiate several Scale formats in Indian Music and learn the naming conventions of the Ragas; Understand the different melodic formats on instrumental music and Time Signatures.

  • PROFICIENCY & VIRTOUSITY

The Core of Musical Learning is not only the Acumen but also the Conviction the students begin to develop in their course of learning. This is a cumulative phase at every level where the Dos and Don’ts get refined and reiterated which will help to build a strong sense of aesthetics.

Students after learning the rudimentary techniques of the Instrument advance to “How to render the Musical Constructs” on the Carnatic Flute and understand “How to present a melody on instrumental format”.

The lessons are designed to meet the learning objectives at each level.

While the Acumen and Ear Training will help the student deliberate the ways of musical understanding on “What to Play”, it is the Virtuosity Development that gives a practical hands-on for “How to play”. The fine skills required to play the Flute or any other Wood wind / Bamboo instrument is a Two-Pronged Approach which essentially differentiates the What to Play & How to Play and are complimentary to each other.

Students learn to play the several Scale formats in Indian Music and to render the different melodic formats on instrumental music and to play corresponding to the Time Signatures of Carnatic Music.

The Flute can also be performed as a lead melody and one of the significant features of the solo in Indian Music is its extemporaneous nature of rendition. The practitioners develop a great zeal on the art form over a period of time and can render any musical composition on stage with completely new improvisations at ease anytime.

Professional Flautists will possess strong Intuitive ability to grasp the Musical Improvisations and reproduce corresponding Fugues as response or a repartee for short phrases. The training required to develop this Intuitive Response skill is often left to the students to develop on their own. However, our exhaustive curriculum includes intense training in Techniques to evoke a Quick Response and stand out although aligned to the orchestral / band protocol.

QRT is one of the important aspects of learning which Beej delivers as an enhanced interactive training method to broaden the idea about different styles of Music and their corresponding school of thought, called as “Patantara” or the “Baani” and tend to minimize the response time of the student to render any random musical expression, a melodic phrase or a lyrical improvisation.

Real Time Rendition is the crucial component of any performing art as it refers to the ability to render a whole musical composition without pause or break in between. This will make the student comply with rendering a composition with rapt focus on the musical plane of thought and helps to develop skill over impromptu improvisations at a later stage.

Students are trained to understand the format of a full length composition through Play Along Techniques – an interactive approach to participate in different musical modes such as a Whole, Part, Second or Accompany.

  • REPERTOIRE BUILDING

A good repertoire is the key to gain all-round mastery in Music irrespective of whether it is Vocal or Instrumental.
